Interrupteurs rapide haute tension réalisés par mise en série de composants semi-conducteurs pour convertisseurs de forte énergie

Abstract : The main problem you may have when designing switches made of several elements connected in series is the bad distribution of voltages and currents through the components during the switching and static phases. This is mainly due to the components themselves, to their operating control and to the connections ( delays, differences in speeds, parasitic capacitances on each stage, distribution of the saturation currents through each serial connected component, leakage currents ... ) . Unbalances can be decreased thanks to synchronous controls using pulse transformers, which are perfectly suitable for controlling numerous serial connected elements. Decreasing parasitic capacitances towards the earth, which create an unbalanced distribution of the power current through the serial connected devices, is also desirable. Beside this technological aspect, an active clamping using a feedback from the power side to the control side is the best solution for MOSFETs and IGBTs. Since the studied "switching modules" have to withstand high voltage and very little switching speeds, electrical noise on measurement and control devices, partial discharges and the perfect matching of active and passive components to high voltage must be carefully examined. A conceptual study of "switching functions" led us to keep in mind that we could use modular units connected in series. Their advantage consists in improving the cost and delay of maintenance. For instance, a 15000V/2A and a 30000V/600 A switches have been built. Those experimental works definitely brought us to consider conceiving fast high voltage switches made of several one kilovolt nominal voltage components.
