Tomographie passive par ondes élastiques guidées pour le Contrôle Santé des Structures

Abstract : Elastic guided elastic waves show great potential for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of thin structures (plate-like, pipes or tanks) thanks to their ability to propagate over long distances. This article presents the development of a new approach for SHM called elastic guided waves passive tomography. This technology is based on the combination of elastic guided waves tomography algorithms and cross-correlation of ambient noise technique. It provides high-resolution and reference-free thickness maps of an area surrounded by a distribution of sensors, without emitting waves, just by analyzing the elastic noise that naturally exists in the structure (due to vibrations, aerodynamic turbulences, etc.). This offers a low power and robust sensing unit for SHM systems. Passive tomography images produced by state of the art guided waves tomography algorithm using experimental signal produced by piezoelectric transducers are presented with application to corrosion detection on plates and pipes. Future development of this technique are based on the use of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) sensors on optical fibers in order to operate in harsh environments (high or cryogenic temperatures, radiations) with minimal intrusiveness thanks to the high multiplexing capabilities of such sensors.
