Coupling ICP / MS - Laser ablation relevance for prototypical Corium characterization

Abstract

Knowledge of elementary and isotopic corium composition is essential to understand the phenomena occurring during melting of reactor cores and consider recovery solutions on damaged reactors.Elemental and isotopic analysis by coupling laser ablation - ICP / MS has been chosen to avoid many step on sample preparation, and also for sensitivity which provide information about the different phases of the material. Laser ablation coupling inductively plasma mass spectrometry is Under development in our chemical analyses laboratory. This study concerns two chemical elements in prototypical samples (simulated corium, uranium and zirconium). in order to minimize analytical uncertainties several ICP and laser parameters must be optimized. In the end, not enough reference materials, related to splits phenomena (elemental and isotopic) during the laser / sample interaction, allows to consider a semi quantitative approach, with a result in absolute contents, or elemental ratio, with an accuracy of $\pm$20%.
