Optical diagnostics for multiphase flows characterization

Résumé

Nowadays, the design of the separation processes for the nuclear fuel cycle is based on an approach involving tests and developments on small-scale prototypes as well as a phenomenological approach, relying on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and chemical engineering. Moreover, most of these separation processes are based on multi-phase flows (liquid-liquid extraction, dissolution, leaching, filtration, precipitation, etc.). As a consequence, the understanding and the modeling of such processes require the measurement of both local and average properties of multiphase flows and become a growing issue. Besides, as the R&D studies are generally conducted on small-scale experiments, access to these quantities is often difficult, especially considering that measurement methods should not disturb the observed system. For these reasons, optical methods, associated to extensive and rigorous physical simulation of light/particles interactions, are particularly relevant and, accordingly, under specific developments since several years at CEA. In this communication, some techniques developed at CEA (Marcoule center) for multiphase flows characterization purposes, will be introduced. A specific focus will be done on the dispersed phase properties measurement (particle size distribution, particles composition, etc.), which remains most challenging. Regarding this point, two appropriate interferometric methods, e.g. i) Digital In Line Holography that allows a simultaneous measurement of 3Dpositions, shape and size of flowing particles, even considering astigmatic geometries and ii) Rainbow Refractometry that gives access to the size and refractive index of each particle or set of particles (directly linked to their composition then considering linear optics), will be detailed. The relevance of more classical approaches, like classical or high-speed direct visualization coupled to an innovative image processing, will be also presented. Finally, the strong link with CFD will be discussed through typical results obtained on gas-liquid, liquid-liquid and solid-liquid flows encountered in nuclear fuel reprocessing process.
