Challenges in numerical simulation of electromagnetic material evaluation processes for ferromagnetic specimens

Résumé

The numerical solution of the non-linear, hysteretic electromagnetic induction problem involved in material evaluation techniques is discussed. The general solution scheme for this kind of problems is presented, and emphasis is given at those specific points, which are critical for the solution accuracy and the performance of the solver. For the purposes of this study, two representative cases, frequently met in material evaluation applications, namely the inspection of a planar ferromagnetic specimen via a magnetic yoke and a set of air-coils, respectively, are treated using two numerical solvers based on the Finite Integration Technique (FIT) and the Finite Elements Technique (FEM). The results obtained with these two methods and the respective performances of the solvers are discussed.
